Introduction

Wheelgate House is a home based bed and breakfast with 3 bedrooms. The house is about 250 years old and has beamed ceilings. If you have any queries that the statement does not answer, please contact us.

Pre-arrival and Directions

Wheelgate House is in the centre of Bampton in the Market Square. It is on the same side of the road as Budgeons Stores and opposite the War Memorial. It has a green door.

There is a bus stop opposite the house and there are frequent services to Oxford, Carterton and Witney. The nearest train station is Oxford, about 18 miles away. There is a taxi service in the village, we can make bookings for you.

We ask that you let us know your approximate time of arrival by 10am on the morning of your first night’s stay.

Arrival

Parking is available directly in front of the house and in the village square. The main entrance to the B & B is via the front door. There is a step up of 1.75” (4cm) from the pavement. The door is kept locked, there is a door bell to the left (push hard) and a knocker on the centre of the door. You step into the dining hall. After being welcomed you will be asked to complete a registration form and shown to your room. We are happy to assist with luggage. A key will be provided for use during your stay.

The Stay

The bedrooms

There are no bedrooms on the ground floor.

The bedrooms are approached via a door to the left and beyond the dining hall where there is a step down of 4” (10cm). The door is 2’9” (83cm) wide and should be closed after entering. You cross the living room to the stairway. The staircase is in a curve. The first 2 steps are 10” (15cm) high, the next 6 steps are 7.5” (19cms) high and the top 2 are 9” (23cm) high. They are of varying depth and width. There is a sturdy rope hand rail to the left. On reaching the top there is a large landing where there is some seating available.

Twin Room 11’ (3.35m) x 15’ (4.57m) The Twin Room is to the right, its private bathroom is to the left. Both doorways open into the rooms and are about 29” (74cm) wide. It has 2 divan beds, wardrobe, dressing table, bedside chest, 2 chairs, bedside lamps, TV with remote control and teletext, kettle (tea, coffee etc), hairdryer, mirror, radio alarm clock, extra pillows and blankets, iron and board. There is a fitted carpet, good contrast in décor and pictures on the walls. There is a good sized radiator in the room. The window is double glazed with a panoramic view of the village square.

Private Bathroom
The private bathroom has a bath with thermostatic shower over, a wash hand basin and WC. Towels, soap, shampoo and shower gel are provided. There is an electric heater and non slip floor.

Double Room with en-suite bathroom 15’ (4.57m) x 14’6” (4.4m)
The double room is approached from the top of the stairs across the landing, turn right and up a step, 6” (15cm) high. The bedroom door is on the left. The door opens into the room and is 2’ (60cm) wide. There is a step up at the doorway of 6” (15cm). The ceiling is 6’ 3” (192cm) high and there is a lower central beam. The room has 1 double divan bed, wardrobe, bedside cabinets, 2 x chest of drawers, 2 x chairs, bedside lamps, mirrors, TV with remote control and teletext, kettle (tea, coffee etc), hairdryer, radio alarm clock, extra pillows and blankets. There is a fitted carpet, good contrast in décor, pictures on the walls and a large radiator in the room. The window is double glazed with a panoramic view of the village square. The en-suite bathroom has a bath with electric shower over, a wash hand basin and WC. Towels, soap, shampoo and shower gel are provided. There is a heated towel rail and non slip floor.

Top Bedroom 9’ (2.75m) x 12’ (3.66m)
The top bedroom is on the second floor. From the landing, there is one step up, 6” (15cm) high to a small area at the bottom of the second stairway. The staircase is straight with 11 steps, each 8” (20cm) high. The bedroom is next to its shower room which is off the top landing. The door opens into the room and is 2’2” (66cm) wide. There is a step up at the doorway of 6” (15cm). The room has one double divan bed, bedside table, chest of drawers, chair, mirror, bedside lamp, TV, kettle (tea, coffee etc), hairdryer and radio alarm clock. There is a wardrobe on the landing outside the door. There is a fitted carpet, good contrast in décor and a radiator in the room. The window is double glazed with a panoramic view of the village square.

Shower Room
The shower room has a shower cubicle with electric shower, a wash hand basin and WC. Towels, soap, shampoo and shower gel are provided. There is a heated towel rail in the shower room and non slip floor.

Dining Hall

Breakfast is served in the dining hall on the ground floor. There is a large table and 6 chairs. Menus are provided. Guests are welcome to use the dining room in the evening for take-away or delivered meals, plates and cutlery can be provided on request. Evening meals are available by prior arrangement.

Garden

Guests are welcome to sit in the terraced garden at the back of the house. There is a table and chairs and stone bench. The garden is accessed through the passageway which goes to the back of the house. There are 2 steps up to the back door each 5” (13cm) high. The door is 2’9” (82cm) wide.

Additional Information

Mobile phone reception is generally good. We have wireless internet which is free for guests to use during their stay. A password is required to gain access, please ask. Evening meals are available by prior arrangement, please ask.

We have a dog and 2 cats. The cats live downstairs in the back hall and are not allowed through the inner door to the main living areas of the house. We occasionally accept dogs but only after discussion and they must stay with the guests at all times.

Wheelgate House is a no smoking building. Smoking is allowed in the terraced garden at the back of the house. Smoke detectors are present on all floors. We are able to use the front and back doors if evacuation is needed.

The village of Bampton

There is a myriad of lanes in the village and various parks and places to walk. There is a beautiful old church and an art centre. There are 4 pubs, one does evening meals. There are various takeaways and a coffee house.

There are many pubs and restaurants in the surrounding villages which we are happy to discuss and recommend.
